Our Automation & 5-Axis Symposium at the Laval branch brought together machine shops from across Quebec for a day split between two topics that increasingly overlap: robotic machine tending and 5-axis machining. Attendance skewed toward shops already running multi-axis equipment and evaluating whether a tending cell is the right next step.
Session highlights
The morning session ran a robot machine-tending cell loading a vertical machining centre through a full unattended cycle, with our automation specialists explaining the planning work that goes into fixturing, part flow and safety fencing before a cell like this earns its keep. The afternoon shifted to 5-axis machining, with a live demonstration of simultaneous 5-axis cutting on an aerospace-style bracket and a frank discussion of when the extra axes actually pay for themselves versus when a 3+2 setup is the better investment.
What stood out
The strongest interest was in combining the two: shops asking whether a tending cell can reasonably serve a 5-axis machine given longer, more variable cycle times. Our answer was measured — it depends heavily on part mix — and several attendees booked one-on-one time with our applications engineers afterward to look at their own numbers.
